harvest of bonds :: inigo and owain
part 1

Owain: Hey... can I ask you something?
Inigo: Hm? What? It's rare for you to look so serious. Don't make such a scary face — you'll frighten all those girls who are evacuating right now, you know?
Owain: Don't play around... This is serious.
Inigo: S-sorry... what do you want to ask?
Owain: ... how many people have you killed since you came to this world?
Inigo: ...!! I had no idea what you were going to say, but I didn't think you'd ask something so sudden and crazy like that... if this is one of your usual weird jokes, I think you're going a little too far, Owain.
Owain: Like hell I'd joke about something like this.
Inigo: ..... ... I can't even keep count of something like that anymore.
Owain: You too, huh... It's the same for me.
Inigo: What's with this all of a sudden...?
Owain: When I look at how lively this town is, I dunno... I just suddenly remembered. The first time I killed a person.
Inigo: I see... I think I understand that too. In the future, we didn't have these bustling towns and stores, but in exchange, at least the only thing we fought were Risen. But this world isn't like that.
Owain: Yeah. Our enemies here aren't limited to Risen. The first time I killed a living person... was after I came here to the past.
Inigo: Ye.. yeah. When I arrived here, before I was reunited with everyone, I was all alone, and I had to fight not just Risen, but people too...
Owain: It was tough, huh...
Inigo: Mm. When I killed a person for the first time... I almost couldn't bear it... my hands shook, my tears wouldn't stop, I couldn't sleep at all at night...
Owain: ... yeah. It was the same for me. When we were in the future, a person's life was something you should definitely protect. But as soon as we came to the past, suddenly we had to abandon that idea. There's no way we could deal with the switch that quickly...
Inigo: ... which world do you think is tougher, Owain?
Owain: It's reality that our future world is absolutely horrid. I don't know how many times I witnessed a scene where Risen had just slaughtered everyone.
Inigo: And our parents are dead... but, this world has many tough realities as well. While we have to accept it, we have to overcome that too.
Owain: ... yeah, you're right.

part 2

Owain: Continuing our previous conversation — what are we supposed to do, in the end?
Inigo: Defeat Grima, and make sure the future of despair is averted. Isn't that the only thing we're aiming for?
Owain: I know that, but... I've got this weird feeling. In the future, I was glad that all we had to fight were the Risen and Grima. ... but now that we jumped into the past, we even have to kill people for the sake of the future...
Inigo: You're starting to wonder who our real enemies are... or something like that?
Owain: .....
Inigo: Get a hold of yourself, Owain. Our enemies are the ones who are getting in the way of a peaceful future... all of them, right? The Risen, Grima, even humans... the ones that are blocking our way, they're all... enemies.
Owain: That's the... only way we can think about it, huh. Hah... the more I think about it, the heavier the load feels, being imposed by fate and all.
Inigo: ... but, I believe we can definitely change fate.
Owain: Yeah, I believe too.
Inigo: ... I see. In that case, we're not lost at all. Defeating our enemies that lie before our eyes — that is our justice. Even if someone gets hurt because of that, it's for the sake of saving this world. That way of thinking is the only way we can handle this... right?
Owain: Yeah... exactly. If we get lost, we're the ones that suffer. Throwing away our world and coming to this one will lose all meaning too... it's tough, but it's the same with all of us.
Inigo: Right. We all feel the same way. We lost everybody... our precious people. No matter how brave we act, even small, trifling things get us to remember the pain we felt. Like you today, right?
Owain: T-that was just a trick of the imagination. The evil spirits took advantage of the weakness of my heart...
Inigo: Oh, and we're finally back to the usual Owain. The usual, confusing, nonsensical Owain.
Owain: Who's nonsensical! I'm the chosen Warrior of Light you know!
Inigo: Right, right. Now that you're back to normal, this conversation can come to an end. After this is over, we have a fun festival waiting for us, so come on, smile.
Owain: Hah, if you're telling me that, I might as well.
Inigo: Ahaha, thank you very much, Lord Warrior of Light.
Owain: ... hey, Inigo.
Inigo: Hm? What is it?
Owain: Sorry for asking you such a weird thing and whining at you today. It's not like I'm saying thanks for today but... whenever you're going through painful times, let me support you. If anything happens, tell me, all right?
Inigo: Huh!? I-I'm happy but... are you sure you're fit for such a big role~?
Owain: W-what did you say!? I'm...!
Inigo: Sorry, sorry, I was joking. ... I know you're the kind of person who would lend an ear to someone. If something ever happens, I'll talk to you. So thanks, whenever that time comes. I'm counting on you, Owain.
